Glenariff Kerry Hill Sheep

The Glenariff Kerry Hill Flock

After many years of visiting agricultural shows with our Beef Shorthorn cattle, we were always keen to visit and look at the sheep on show. To us, one of the standout breeds was always the Kerry Hills and so the journey began.

In 2002, our first visit to the breed society sale in Ludlow was successful with the purchase of 9 ewe lambs.
Five from Anthony John of the Lax flock, three from Pam Chilman of the Kinsham flock and
one from the John and Phillipa Owens Woodhouse flock.

Once we had returned home with the foundation lambs we decided to call Anthony John to enquire as to whether he had further lambs available which he did. We then purchased another eleven which were collected by Andrew from Llansteffan.

The following year we needed a ram so in 2003 Nick returned to Ludlow with the task of purchasing one of these. Of course, he came home with two! The first was Birchwood Dylan and the second was Llanerch Wicklow Boy. Despite the initial doubts as to why we required two rams, it did indeed prove to be very successful with both being top quality sires.

Other notable rams used over the years are:
• Woonton Big John •
• Mynd Wallace •
• Woodhouse (2) 2862 •
• Woodhouse 706 •

Of course, with Andrew’s vast knowledge and experience of working with sheep he was asked by the Kerry Hill Flock Book Society to judge the National Flock Competition.
